提到法國作曲家古諾，樂迷大多聽過他的宗教曲或歌劇作品，對他的交響曲作品則少有印象，但其實他的交響曲在法國管弦樂的發展上有著承先啟後的地位。1854年，古諾以海頓的作品為範本寫下｢第一號交響曲｣，融入他所熟悉的歌唱性格，第二樂章更以快板取代傳統的慢板，啟發比才創作｢C大調交響曲｣。｢第一號交響曲｣獲得不錯的迴響後，古諾在隔年譜寫｢第二號交響曲｣，這次以貝多芬為模仿對像，運用大量的對比手法與主題鋪陳，開創交響曲新局。
